An HTTP callback Meta or your platform sends when something happens — a message arrives, a status changes.

Rather than asking repeatedly whether anything new has happened, you give a URL and events are pushed to it: inbound messages, delivery and read receipts, template status changes.
Webhooks are what make coexistence work — messages on the app and the API are mirrored to each other in real time through them — and they are how you connect WhatsApp to systems that have no ready-made connector.
