of that is free
Utility templates sent while the customer’s 24-hour service window is still open cost nothing. Answering faster is a pricing decision, not just a support one.
An estimate, not a quote. Meta bills per delivered message at the recipient market’s rate and reprices on its own schedule; volume tiers can lower utility and authentication further. Defaults shown are list rates as of 1 July 2026 — check Meta’s pricing documentation for the current card.
Four kinds of message. Two of them are free.
Service
FreeAny non-template reply inside an open 24-hour window. Since November 2024 these cost nothing at all, however many you send.
Utility
Free inside the windowOrder and delivery updates. Charged if the window has closed, free if it is still open — which is why response time shows up on the invoice.
Marketing
Always chargedPromotions and re-engagement, at the highest rate of the three and with no volume discount. This is where a bill runs away.
Authentication
ChargedOne-time passcodes. Priced with utility on the same rate card and eligible for the same volume tiers.
Three ways this bill gets smaller
-
Answer inside the window
Every utility template you send while the window is open is free. A shared inbox that replies in minutes turns a charged send into a free one.
-
Send marketing to people who reply
Marketing has no volume discount, so the only lever is fewer, better-targeted sends. Segment first; a broadcast to everyone is the most expensive thing on this page.
-
Watch the platform markup
Meta’s rate is Meta’s rate. What differs between providers is the per-message markup on top — Watx adds none, and charges a flat plan instead.
Questions, answered.
Who do I actually pay?
Two separate bills. Meta charges you for the template messages you send, billed to the payment method on your WhatsApp Business account. Your platform charges you a subscription for the software. On Watx the second one is a flat plan with no per-message markup — many providers add $0.003–$0.010 on top of every Meta message, which is the line worth checking on any quote.
Which messages are free?
Anything you send inside an open 24-hour customer service window that is not a template — so ordinary replies in a live conversation cost nothing. Utility templates sent inside that window are free too. Free entry point conversations, which start from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad or a Facebook Page call-to-action, give you a 72-hour free window instead.
What changed with per-message pricing?
Until 1 July 2025 Meta billed 24-hour "conversations". Since then it bills each delivered template message by category — marketing, utility or authentication — so a chatty conversation no longer costs more than a quiet one, and a burst of marketing templates costs a lot more than it used to. Service messages became free separately, in November 2024.
Why does the rate depend on the country?
Meta prices per market and the market is decided by the recipient’s country code, not by where your business is registered. An Indian company messaging a German customer pays the German rate. If you send across several countries, run the calculator once per market and add the results.
Are these rates guaranteed?
No, and nobody can guarantee them — Meta reprices markets on its own schedule. The defaults here are Meta's list rates as of 1 July 2026, which is why every rate is an editable field: if you have a current rate card in front of you, type its numbers in and this will be exact.
Do volume discounts apply?
Meta offers volume tiers on utility and authentication messages, never on marketing. This calculator uses one flat rate per category, so at high volume the utility and authentication lines are a slight over-estimate — which is the direction you want an estimate to be wrong in.
