How to apply for the WhatsApp Business API

There is no application form to fill in and wait on. Access comes through a platform connecting your Meta Business Account to the Cloud API — which is faster than people expect, except for the one step that is not.

6 steps · 1–3 days

Before you start

  • A Meta Business Account (free to create)
  • Business registration documents for verification
  • A phone number not currently active on regular WhatsApp
  • A platform to connect it to

The steps

  1. 1

    Start business verification first

In Meta Business Manager, begin business verification before anything else. Everything else here takes hours; this can take days, and it blocks going fully live. You will need documents showing the legal entity name and address.

  2. 2

Decide what happens to your number

Either move an existing number onto the Cloud API, or keep it on the WhatsApp Business app and add the API alongside it with coexistence. A number currently registered on ordinary WhatsApp must be deregistered there first.

If you are unsure, start with coexistence. It is reversible in a way full migration is not.

  3. 3

    Connect through embedded signup

In your chosen platform, start the guided connect flow. You sign in with the Facebook account that owns the Business Account, pick or create a WhatsApp Business Account, and register the number — no copying tokens between dashboards.

  4. 4

    Set your display name

This is what customers see before they save your number. Meta reviews it against its display name guidelines, so it must reflect the actual business rather than a generic category. Getting it wrong here delays going live.

  5. 5

    Submit your first templates

You cannot message anyone outside an open 24-hour window until at least one template is approved. Submit the two or three you will actually use first — an order or booking confirmation is the usual starting point.

  6. 6

Send a test, then go live

Message your own number, check the template renders with the placeholders filled, and confirm replies land in your inbox. Then start with the traffic you know is wanted rather than a large campaign.

Where this usually goes wrong

  • Leaving business verification until last

It is the only step with a multi-day tail and the only one no provider can accelerate. Start it on day one even if nothing else is ready.

  • Expecting your chat history to move

It does not, on any platform or either route. The inbox fills from the next message onward; import contacts from CSV separately.

  • Launching with a big campaign

A new number is capped at 250 unique customers per 24 hours. Build the tier with wanted traffic before you need the headroom.
